Apex Farmers Market

The market sets up on Depot Plaza beside The Depot, the old railroad station at 220 N. Salem St. It is a producers’ market: vendors generally farm or make what they sell within 150 miles, according to the market’s own page. Vendors change from week to week and include produce, meat and seafood, baked goods, prepared food, and handmade crafts, jewelry and art. The market is run by a volunteer board of vendors and customers.

Paying. Most vendors take cards, but the market says cash is preferred, because card fees cut into small vendors’ margins.

SNAP and WIC. With Wake County’s support the market accepts SNAP and WIC and offers Double Bucks, which match what you spend in SNAP or WIC so you can buy more. Stop at the Welcome Tent for tokens. Details are on the market’s community support page.

Composting. Wake County lists the Apex market as one of the markets that take food scraps for composting free of charge.

Dogs. Friendly dogs are welcome on a short leash, at least 10 feet from food booths.

Restrooms. The market lists public restrooms downtown at 124 N. Salem St., 219 N. Salem St. and The Halle Cultural Arts Center, 237 N. Salem St.

Parking and getting there. The town closes the Depot Plaza lot to parking on market Saturdays until about 1 p.m. Use the town’s downtown parking map (PDF) or the Apex Parking app. GoApex Route 1 stops in front of The Halle. North Salem Street is one-way southbound during the Salem Streetscape project, but sidewalks stay open.

Seasonal nights. Market vendors also sell at the town’s Love Local nights at The Depot, including Fall Harvest Night, 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16. See things to do this month.

How Double Bucks work

Wake County’s program doubles SNAP spending at participating markets. At Western Wake, for example, spending $5 in EBT gets you $10 worth of food. Ask at each market’s information tent; the county’s Food and Nutrition Services page explains the program, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture lists what SNAP can buy.
