Most of Apex gets power from the town's own electric utility. Report an outage by texting OUT to 919-372-7475 or calling the same number. Outage map inside.

Last checked Oct. 11, 2026. Facts on this page come from the Town of Apex Electric Utilities and outage reporting pages and from Duke Energy. This page is updated each season.

Apex owns its electric system. The Apex Electric Department has run it since 1917 and serves more than 28,000 customers in the town limits, parts of Cary and some rural areas. If your power bill comes from the Town of Apex, report outages to the town. If it comes from Duke Energy, report to Duke.

Four ways to report an Apex outage

The town says it may not know your power is out, so report it every time:

  1. Text OUT to 919-372-7475. Customers are enrolled automatically using the phone number on their utility account. If the text says you are not enrolled, update your contact details in the MyAccount portal.
  2. Call the automated outage line, 919-372-7475.
  3. Online: the outage report page. Search your address without the street suffix (leave off Road, Court, Street).
  4. App: Apex Outage, on the App Store and Google Play, which also sends restoration updates.

After you report, town staff may call you. The town asks customers to answer, because the crew may need details. A street light out has its own report form.

The outage map

The Apex outage map shows the size and general location of current outages and, when known, an estimated time of restoration. During a large storm, the town may not post restoration estimates until crews have assessed the damage.

The Apex system in numbers

According to the Electric Department, the town maintains:

Item Amount
Customers More than 28,000
Underground lines 735 miles
Overhead lines 161 miles
Street and area lights 7,500
Owned and run by the town since 1917

What the town says about restoration

From the town’s outage FAQ:

  • After a major storm, crews first deal with public safety and then restore hospitals, police stations, water treatment plants and the main lines that serve the most customers.
  • Underground lines can still go out in storms, because power reaches neighborhoods through overhead lines first, and underground repairs can take longer.
  • Calling more than once does not speed things up.
  • A “power restored” message during a big event may be wrong for a small pocket of homes. If you are still out, reply to the call or text.
  • You are not billed for electricity you could not use during an outage.
  • The town does not pay for spoiled food or other storm losses.

Medical equipment

The town has no priority restoration list. Its Medical Alert program gives households that rely on life-sustaining equipment advance notice of planned maintenance outages. Email the enrollment form to utilities@apexnc.org. The town says anyone on medical equipment should keep a backup power source and a plan to reach the nearest medical facility.

Getting ready for storms

The town’s Storm Center links to the state’s ReadyNC guide and the National Hurricane Center. Forecasts and warnings for Apex come from the National Weather Service office in Raleigh.
