Welcome to Apex. Most new residents need to do the same dozen things in their first weeks. Here they are in order, with the official link for each.

First calls

  • Town utilities (electric, water, sewer, trash): Ask Apex, 919-249-3311; schedule a connection
  • Utility emergencies, 24 hours: 919-372-7475
  • Natural gas: Enbridge Gas North Carolina, 877-776-2427
  • Schools: WCPSS Student Assignment, 919-431-7333
  • Everything else at the town: our who to call guide

1. Start town utilities

The Town of Apex provides electric, water, sewer, garbage, recycling, yard waste and area lights to most homes in town. Schedule service through the MyAccount connection request at least 24 hours ahead; connections are made Monday to Friday except town holidays. If you are moving within Apex, your new address gets a new account, and you must close the old one separately. The town may require a deposit depending on your credit history. Details are on the connection page.

Not every address gets every service. The town lists these as examples:

  • No town electric (water, sewer and solid waste only): Beckett Crossing, Carriage Downs, Citiside, Colvin Park, Enclave at White Oak Creek, Sunset Hills, Waterford Green and Weddington
  • Water and sewer only: Avalon Peaks
  • Town electric only: Bishops Gate, Giverny, Stonecrest and Weathersby

The town also supplies electric to some Cary addresses. If your home is not on the town’s electric system, ask the seller or landlord which company serves it; Duke Energy customers can start service at duke-energy.com. Call 919-249-3311 if you are unsure. Outages: see our power outages guide.

2. Natural gas

Enbridge Gas North Carolina supplies natural gas in the area and lists bill payment locations in nearby Cary. Not every street has a gas line; use its availability check, then start service or call 877-776-2427, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. Smell gas? Enbridge’s emergency line is the same number, 877-776-2427.

3. Internet

Providers vary by street. The Federal Communications Commission’s National Broadband Map lists every provider that reports service at your exact address. AT&T publishes an Apex service page with an availability check for AT&T Fiber and its other home internet. Check each provider’s own site for sign-up.

4. Trash and recycling

Your carts come with the house. Find your pickup day in the Apex Collects app; yard waste moves to every other week on Oct. 19. New residents get one free pickup of empty, flattened moving boxes. All in our trash and recycling guide.

5. Schools

Your address sets your base school in the Wake County Public School System. Enroll online; kindergarten registration for 2027-28 opens Oct. 15. See our schools guide.

6. Driver’s license and car registration

North Carolina’s Division of Motor Vehicles handles both:

  • Driver’s license: apply in person at a driver license office with proof of identity, Social Security number, North Carolina address and legal presence, plus a printed proof of North Carolina liability insurance. Getting a North Carolina license cancels your old state’s license, the DMV says (what to bring).
  • Title and registration: take your out-of-state title to a license plate agency or mail the paperwork (vehicle titles). Wake County collects property tax on vehicles with the registration renewal.

7. Property taxes and tax relief

Your bill comes from Wake County and includes the town rate; it is due Sept. 1. North Carolina has no general homestead exemption, but seniors, disabled owners and disabled veterans can apply for relief by June 1. See our property tax guide.

8. Register to vote

Update your registration with your new address. Online through the DMV, on paper, or in person during early voting. See our voting guide.

9. Pets

Apex does not require pets to be registered, the town says, but animals must be leashed or fenced and should wear rabies tags. The town’s dog parks require registration. Animal control: Wake County, 919-212-7387. See our parks guide.

10. Building or renovating

Permits and zoning are handled by the town; the new MyServices portal opens Nov. 2. See our permits and zoning guide.
