Registering to vote
You can register in Wake County if you are a U.S. citizen, will be 18 by the general election, have lived in the county for 30 days before the election and are not serving a felony sentence, including probation, post-release supervision or parole, according to the county’s registration page.
- Same-day registration: after the Oct. 9 deadline, you can still register and vote in person at an early voting site. You cannot register on Election Day.
- Online: customers with a North Carolina driver’s license or DMV ID can register or update their address through the NC DMV.
- On paper: print the registration form (PDF). Forms received within 25 days of an election are processed after it.
Photo ID
Voters are asked to show an acceptable photo ID when voting in person. The State Board of Elections lists every acceptable ID. If you do not have one:
- Get a free voter ID at the Board of Elections Operations Center, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., with your name, date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number, or at the DMV. The county issues them through the end of early voting.
- At the polls, you can still vote by signing a Photo ID Exception Form, or vote and bring your ID to the Board of Elections by noon on the third business day after the election.
Voting by mail
Any registered voter can vote by mail; no excuse is needed. Request a ballot through the state’s absentee portal or on the county’s form by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20. Return it with a photocopy of an acceptable photo ID, or the exception form included in the packet. The ballot must reach the Board of Elections by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day. Only you, a near relative or a legal guardian may hand-deliver it (a voter with a disability may ask someone else); North Carolina does not allow drop boxes. Track it with BallotTrax. Details are on the county’s absentee page.
On Election Day
Polls are open 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. You must vote at your assigned precinct; find it with the state voter search or the county polling place lookup. The Operations Center is not a polling place. Your sample ballot is in the same state voter search.
Town elections
Apex Town Council elections are held in odd-numbered years. The council is the mayor and five council members, each elected to a four-year term on a staggered schedule, according to the town. Results for every election are posted by the State Board of Elections.
To reach the mayor and council between elections, see our guide to who to call at Apex Town Hall.
