Apex shows draft land use and transportation recommendations for Peak Plan 2055 on Thursday. It is the last public forum before the plan is written up.

Apex will show the draft recommendations of its new long-range plan, Peak Plan 2055, at a drop-in forum Thursday. The plan will guide where and how the town grows for the next 30 years.

It is the third and final public forum in the process, the town says. Residents can stop by any time from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Apex Senior Center, 63 Hunter St., in the Saunders and Salem rooms. The details are in the town calendar listing.

What will be on show

The town says the forum will present draft recommendations on:

  • future land use
  • transportation
  • which steps to carry out first

Peak Plan 2055 is three pieces of work in one, according to the town’s Peak Plan 2055 project site:

  • an updated comprehensive plan for the town
  • a transportation plan
  • a study of the N.C. 55 corridor

The plan covers the town limits and the extraterritorial jurisdiction, the unincorporated part of Wake County just outside the limits where Apex handles zoning. It also covers the town’s future planning area.

Why the town is rewriting its plan

The current comprehensive plan, Advance Apex 2045, was adopted in 2019. The town’s project site says Apex had about 55,000 people around then and has more than 80,000 today. It says “substantial development has occurred, and more is on the horizon.”

The comprehensive plan is the document the Town Council and the Planning Board check when they decide rezoning requests. On Tuesday, for example, the council holds a hearing on the 460-home North Salem Street plan. The current plan’s 2045 Land Use Map already marks that land for mixed use, and the rezoning would change the map too.

Where the process stands

The project site lists three phases:

  1. Discovery: data collection, focus groups and the first public forum. Complete.
  2. Development: land use and conservation scenarios, the second forum, a “vision” plan and concepts for smaller areas. Complete.
  3. Direction: policy recommendations, an action plan, the third forum and review drafts of the plan. Under way now.

The town expects the planning process to end at the end of 2026. The forum materials will be posted on the project site after Thursday, the town says.

What it means for you

If you care about what gets built near you, which roads are widened or where new parks and shops go, this is the last organized chance to react before review drafts are written. You do not need to stay for a presentation. Drop in, look at the boards and leave comments.

If you cannot go, the materials go online afterward at the project site, where you can also sign up for email updates. Questions go to the town’s Planning Department, 919-249-3505. Our building permits and zoning guide explains how rezoning works in Apex.
