New Hill is the rural community on Apex’s southwest edge, where Old US 1 meets New Hill Olive Chapel Road and New Hill Holleman Road. It has its own post office name: the addresses we checked here had New Hill mailing addresses in ZIP code 27562, even those inside the Town of Apex. OpenStreetMap marks it as a named place, and the town’s 2045 Land Use Map update makes it a focus area, “predominantly rural density residential” with “numerous potential historic sites” around the Old US 1 crossroads.

Where it is

The 2045 plan says New Hill is “generally bounded by” several approved developments and subdivisions, Little Beaver Creek and the CSX railroad. It calls the area “a buffer between non-residential uses to the east and rural areas to the west” and notes that substantial development nearby has been spurred by the Apex Friendship schools and by water and sewer service. The plan’s map designates the strip between Old US 1 and the railroad, beginning at Mason Road, as park land “to support the vision for a linear park.”

The town’s Western Big Branch Area Plan, adopted Nov. 21, 2024, covers “portions of the New Hill and Friendship communities.” It aims to preserve rural homes, farms and open space, to “honor the history” of both communities and to encourage grocery and convenience stores near New Hill Holleman Road and US 1. It notes that New Hill’s listing as a National Register Historic District brings recognition from the State Historic Preservation Office, and that “the only protection that is granted from this designation is in the form of Section 106 Review” under federal law.
